Women in Cinema Award in Venice

Legendary film director and Oscar winner Jane Campion awarded at the Women in cinema award in Venice.
The Women in Cinema Award took place as part of the 80th Edition of the Venice International Film Festival and was presented by presenter and women’s rights activist Claudia Conte on the 5th of September at the Italian pavilion of the Excelsior hotel.
The awards evening was organized with the patronage of the Ministry of Culture of Italy and was an official event of the program of the festival. Among the winners of the awards – legendary film director and member of the Jury of the Venice Film Festival 80 Jane Campion , world known virologist Ilaria Capua, singer Noemi a star of Italian cinema and theatre Monica Guerritore and the director and screenwriter Kaouther Ben Hania who tells in her films the difficult condition of women in Tunisia.
“This year we have chosen to dedicate Wica to the topic of violence against women, – explains Claudia Conte, – because we are facing a real emergency and it is important to keep the spotlight on. According to Istat statistics 31.5% of women have suffered some form of violence. We want not only to express solidarity and closeness, but also to encourage them to denounce the violence”.
The President of the Veneto region Luca Zaia also expressed his appreciation for the award:
“This is an important initiative, on a topic that is never discussed enough. I want to congratulate those who have carried out the initiative, certain that it will be a success”.
